Greene says he wants to stay a Padre

Unlike previous reports and fan belief, Khalil Greene says he wants to say a Padre for life.

He spoke to reporters on Monday and said, "there's nowhere else where I would want to play than San Diego." There had been a belief among a lot of Padre, and baseball in general, fans that Greene wanted to move closer to his family in South Carolina, possibly to a team like Atlanta.

I guess we can put this bed for good? Eh, maybe not that quickly.

Padres nearing deal with Greene

The San Diego Padres are getting close to a 2-year $11M deal with SS Khalil Greene according to the AP.

If the 2 sides agree to the deal, it would keep them from going to an arbitration hearing.

Could the Padres trade Khalil Greene?

In an article from Bill Center of the San Diego Union Tribune on Saturday, the San Diego Padres tried to get a 3 or 4 year deal done with SS Khalil Greene.

When asked about the conversations between the Padres and Greene's agent Mike Milchin, Padres' GM Kevin Towers said “We explored a longer contract with Greene's agent the last couple of weeks, but we heard back that they weren't interested in what we proposed.”

Towers was then asked if a long term deal would eventually get done. His response is surprising.

“A long-term contract with Khalil at this time is probably doubtful, I don't know, it might not be able to get done. Khalil's family is on the East Coast and I think there are some health concerns."

A thought that the Padres' front office may have to consider is trading the Greene to an east coast team, but they will look for the right package in order to pull the trigger. Greene is one of the best young shortstops in the game, and a player the Padres don't want to lose, but they may have no choice.

Players headed for arbitration

MLB.com has a list of players that have filed for arbitration but did not come to an agreement with their respective teams.

Among that list is Angels' closer Francisco Rodriguez, Phillies' 1st Baseman Ryan Howard, Orioles' left-hander Erik Bedard, Yankees' right-hander Chien-Ming Wang and Padres' shortstop Khalil Greene.

Arbitration hearings will take place February 1st through the 20th.

Padres, Nats discussed deal for Khalil Greene?

According to Barry Svrluga of the Washington Post, the Padres and Nationals had discussions about Padres' shortstop Khalil Greene. The deal would have sent Chad Cordero, Felip Lopez and Nook Logan to San Diego in return for Khalil Greene.

I can't imagine the Padres would make this deal, let alone talk about it. I know that Kevin Towers has a knack for finding diamond in the rough relievers, but Chad Cordero hardly fits the bill.
