Nationals avoid arbitration with closer Cordero

According to AP Sports Writer Howard Fendrich, the Washington Nationals avoided arbitration with closer Chad Cordero, signing him to a 1-year $6.2M deal for 2008, a $2.05M raise from last year's salary ($4.15).

With Cordero signed, the Nationals still have 3 arbitration eligible players remaining, infielder Felipe Lopez, starter Tim Redding and reliever Jon Rauch.

Padres, Nats discussed deal for Khalil Greene?

According to Barry Svrluga of the Washington Post, the Padres and Nationals had discussions about Padres' shortstop Khalil Greene. The deal would have sent Chad Cordero, Felip Lopez and Nook Logan to San Diego in return for Khalil Greene.

I can't imagine the Padres would make this deal, let alone talk about it. I know that Kevin Towers has a knack for finding diamond in the rough relievers, but Chad Cordero hardly fits the bill.
