Mike Sweeney signs with Oakland

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN reports, the Oakland A's have signed long time Kansas City Royal Mike Sweeney to a minor league contract on Sunday.

Sweeney had received interest from the San Diego Padres as recently as last week, but the Padres are close to a deal with former DBack Tony Clark.

The Associated Press reports, the San Diego Padres are close to a 1-year $900,000 deal with free-agent Tony Clark.

The deal would bring back a guy who played high school and college ball in San Diego. The Padres always seem to bring back the hometown boys (ex. Brian Giles, Marcus Giles, Adrian Gonzalez, Mark Prior, etc.).

Clark grew up in San Diego County and would be a great addition to the Padre clubhouse, not to mention that right-hander Chris Young wouldn't have to face Clark again. He's 4-9 against Young, all 4 hits were HR's.

Giants interested in Tony Clark

According to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Giants have expressed interest in free agent 1st baseman Tony Clark.

The Giants would use the left-handed hitting Clark to share time at 1st with incoming rookie Dan Ortmeier.

In the same article, Schulman also confirms that the Giants were among 10 other teams that were in Arizona to watch free agent right-hander Kris Benson throw. Benson is coming off season ending shoulder surgery, but there's word that Benson looked impressive during his workout.

Tony Clark may not return to Arizona

Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports that the Arizona Diamondbacks have pulled their 2-year contract offer, to Tony Clark, off the table.

Clark confirmed that, when he spoke with Arizona GM Josh Byrnes, that they would need Clarks' roster spot to make their pending trades work. Knowing that information, it seems like the DBacks are ready to go in another direction.

As a Padre fan, if I'm Kevin Towers, I'm on the phone with Clark's agent TODAY. He's still a very good hitter and a guy who's a very good defensive replacement when Adrian Gonzalez needs a day off.

Rays interested in Tony Clark, Geoff Jenkins

After inking Troy Percival to a 2-year deal, the Rays are said to be interested in someone that can play a corner outfield spot as well as 1st base. They could be looking at either Tony Clark or Geoff Jenkins to fill that role.
